A pillar of the steel and construction market, the South African Institute of Steel Construction (SAISC) announced the 2020 Steel Awards winners online in a virtual ceremony hosted on Thursday, 15 October 2020. With the understanding of the tough current economic climate, the Steel Awards nominations were once again viewed and critiqued through the virtuous lens of positivity, innovation and creativity.
Macsteel partnered with consultancy firm WSP Africa to assist with the design and specification of cellular beams for a large shopping mall development in Douala, Cameroon. Douala Grand Mall won the Steel Exports award at this year’s Steel Awards. Given the extensive competition from the Turkish based consulting engineers, a collaborative approach was required. The South African based team consisting of the engineers from WSP Africa, steelwork contractors from Cadcon, main contractors from Raubex and the steel manufacturer & supplier Macsteel consorted to conceptualise and offer a competitive and meritorious design solution.
Macsteel assisted WSP Africa in providing an innovative explanation and use of the cellular beams, which was integral in the design solution for the first floor grid. The use of cellular beams aided in optimising the original design by reducing the overall weight of the structure (floor grid) saving on overall project costs and providing significant weight savings of as much as 23%. Over 200 tons of cellular beams were manufactured to be used in the first floor of the building.
Axel Kayoka, Engineering Manager at Macsteel says, “Douala is a milestone for Macsteel, not only is it the furthest region in Africa that we’ve supplied cellular beams to but it is our first project in Cameroon. We are very proud to have been a part of such a dynamic partner team who were all committed from conceptualisation through to implementation and completion of the project.”
