A universal beam is a length of structural steel that has a cross section in the shape of an “I” or an “H”. That is why the material is also known as an I-beam or H-beam. The web (vertical part of the “H” or “I”) withstands hard forces, while the flange (horizontal part of the “H” or “I”) endures bending movements. Sizes are determined by the web, flange and weight per metre.
A universal beam is often used in construction and civil engineering applications, especially as support for buildings to ensure that the structure is strong enough.
