At present, around 40,000 South African learners in Grades 1 to 8 have no school placement due to overcrowding. Despite education shaping our future, too many children lack the resources they need to succeed. Many schools still struggle with outdated infrastructure, limited technology and unsafe learning conditions. This gap in education keeps young minds from reaching their full potential. Together, we can change this.
The ‘Walking the Talk Foundation’ (WTTF) is leading the charge to transform education. Inspired by Dale van Blerk’s 1 800-kilometre walk from Johannesburg to Durban in 2023, visiting 30 schools, WTTF is on a mission to build 1 000 classrooms in ten years. With the help of innovative partners like Moladi (rapid classroom construction), Clevertouch/Starboard and Parrot Products (digital learning specialists), WTTF is able to deliver a modern classroom equipped with the latest technology in just 11 days.
This year, Macsteel is proud to be the Platinum Sponsor of the inaugural WTTF 5KM Charity Walk. “We believe in more than just building structures - Macsteel builds futures. Through this partnership, we’re providing high-quality materials like Harvey Eco Tile and Macsteel Trading IBR sheets to create durable, sustainable classrooms”, says CEO, Mike Benfield. Macsteel’s focus this year is West Park School, a special needs institution in Malvern, Durban. Every year, this school turns away up to 200 learners due to a lack of classroom space. By working with WTTF, Macsteel is helping to expand the school with well-equipped, inclusive learning spaces for children with special needs.
Naturally support from the public and other benefactors can help build more classrooms and, in turn, change more lives. Financial contributions will fund operational costs and keep the initiative moving. Product discounts and donations will keep cost down providing materials, technology, furniture and other essentials. Operational support will also go a long way to help WTTF reach their goals by offering logistics, project management or skilled labour. Even spreading the word through advertising and social media, can assist WTTF to gain more support.
In March, WTTF is hosting a walk inviting the public to join in the movement. The WTTF Charity walk takes place on March 15th, 2025, starting at the Amanzimtoti Community Hall. The public is invited to join in the walk, spend the day outdoors, enjoy family-friendly activities, and take part in something meaningful.
In June 2025, Macsteel will launch the first of three classrooms at West Park School, proving that collaborative impact can achieve the impossible and effect lasting change in education.
WTTF and their supporters is truly walking together creating a lasting impact building a brighter future, one classroom at a time.
