Here's a good news story, and we could all use one of those.
Since 2019, Galway Primary School has been at the centre of a remarkable journey—one made possible by Macsteel, its partners and an entire community pulling together.
What started as a single collaborative project has grown into something much bigger: proof that when a company, a school, and a community decide to link arms, real change follows. Seven years of steady commitment. Seven years of showing up for the same school, the same educators and 1,600+ learners.
Back in 2018, the founders of what would become Galway Connect noticed something troubling: a disconnect. Parents weren't quite connecting with learners. Educators weren't quite connecting with the school community. Everyone was pulling in slightly different directions. So Macsteel, together with Galway Primary and development experts People Dynamics, set three modest but ambitious goals: upskill educators, build genuine connection between everyone with a stake in the school, and make sure learners' basic needs were met.
That's collaborative impact in a nutshell. Not one hero swooping in with a cheque, but many hands, all pulling the same way.
In 2021, the R.I.S.E. Centre opened its doors to support learners who needed a little extra help. What began with a handful of grades has grown to reach every learner at Galway, along with their teachers and parents.
According to the 2024 report, 1,009 learners received support through R.I.S.E. Of the 358 learners identified as at risk, 294 successfully progressed through the school year, while fifteen learners referred for assessment are now on the path to specialised schooling that better meets their needs.
Sometimes the smallest intervention changes the course of a child's education. The programme has since earned Galway Connect a Service Excellence Award from the Department of Education. Yet its greatest achievement is something no trophy can capture: learners discovering confidence in their own abilities.
In 2025, Macsteel's Room to Grow Charity Golf Day turned that quiet, steady progress into something loud and joyful. Hundreds of golfers, partners and supporters came together, raising more than R200,000 towards an AI-powered Language Lab.
The Galway Primary Line Dance Champions opened the day, and by the time the cheque was handed over at the school assembly, with learners singing songs of gratitude, it was clear this day was about community, purpose, and shared celebration.
Then came Walking The Talk Foundation's Galway Fundraiser Walk in April 2026: 1,370 walkers, made up of Macsteel staff, suppliers, families and 732 members of the Galway community itself, all covering five kilometres together. They raised R181,472, and while they walked, the lab itself took shape under the watchful eye of Dale van Blerk: walls painted, flooring laid, desks built, lights wired in.
By May 2026, that empty room had become a 31-seat AI-powered CAMI learning lab, officially unveiled with the Principal, Deputy Principal, and the whole Galway Connect team looking on.
It's already growing: plans are underway to expand it to 45 seats, and Macsteel stepped in again with additional funding to keep the equipment powered, since load-shedding in the area threatened to switch the whole project off before it truly began.
A hybrid solar and battery system is next on the list, to keep the lights on and the learning going, no matter what the grid decides to do.
Good news rarely arrives all at once. It grows, year after year, through people who keep turning up, sharing what they have and believing that tomorrow can be better than today.
That's what happened at Galway Primary School.
And that's the real power of collaborative impact.
As Albert Luthuli once said, to build a nation, you start with its children's minds. Galway Primary School, and everyone who has linked arms with it, is doing exactly that.
