Releasing first-quarter crime statistics for 2024/2025, the South African Police Service reported that South Africa recorded 1 280 cases of murder, 2 068 cases of attempted murder and 15 353 cases of assault against women and children in April, May and June of 2024. All of these numbers show an increase when compared to the same months in 2023.
In light of statistics like these, the KK Moilwa Legacy Foundation with the support of Macsteel Service Centres South Africa, is certain that making Gender Based Violence (GBV) the theme of the ninth Sun Village Masters Soccer Tournament, is the right thing to do. Especially after the tournament did the same in 2023, garnering some very positive feedback. This year’s tournament is set to take place at Sun City from 23 November to 16 December 2024.
Over the three weekends that the tournament took place on last year, the teams competed much to the delight of 800 spectators and community members. The tournament proved to be an ideal platform to address the issue of GBV, due to the high percentage of male spectators. LifeLine Rustenburg was in attendance daily and made use of the opportunity to raise awareness of GBV throughout the tournament.
“The only way that important social issues like GBV will be addressed in our communities, is if we put it on the social agenda,” said Mike Benfield, CEO of Macsteel. “We need to talk about it continuously to make an impact. A soccer tournament is an ideal platform to do that, which is why Macsteel is happy to support the event. As men, we need to stand up and say, ‘enough is enough’.”
The current champs, Lefaragathle Masters, are no strangers to acts of kindness and community support. They recently donated school shoes to Lefaragathle and Bobuanja Primary Schools in their area. The foundation emphasises its commitment to positively impacting lives beyond football, with a focus on supporting education. The donation is seen as a step toward creating a conducive learning environment for students ensuring they can focus on their studies without hindrance.
