It’s Not Really About the Walks

If you only looked at the photos, you’d see crowds, takkies, and smiling faces. But the real story lies in what happens before and after. Macsteel has nurtured a web of connections: employees, suppliers, schools, parents, and local organisations all pulling in the same direction. The walks are just the joyful, visible bit. The heavy lifting happens in the background -shared budgets, swapped skills, and relationships that stick around long after the banners come down.

That collaborative impact on education goes beyond maths and spelling tests. It helps learners figure out who they are, what they’re good at, and where they fit in the world. Education sparks curiosity and increases confidence. It opens doors to concepts children never even knew existed. That’s the big-picture goal Macsteel and its partners are chasing.

A Legacy of Learning

Macsteel’s dedication to education was born from the passion of our late founder, Mr Eric Samson. One of the ways his legacy lives on is through our partnership with Galway Primary School in Germiston. Back in 2018, baseline research for Galway Connect revealed gaps between parents and learners, educators and learners, and parents and their wider school community. Macsteel viewed this as an opportunity to bring everyone back together around a shared purpose.

Fast forward to April 2026, and the "Step into the Future" walk brought together the Galway community for a family-friendly 5km stroll hosted by Walking The Talk Foundation (WTTF).

The result was nothing short of remarkable: 1,370 walkers took part, including 283 Macsteel employees, families and friends, 355 suppliers and partners, and 732 learners, parents and community members. Together, they raised R181,472 in aid of an AI-powered PC Language and Literacy Lab for Galway Primary School. By the time the last walker crossed the finish line, the future classroom already had painted walls, new flooring, lighting, desks and plug points in place.

The Galway walk was part of a much bigger journey. Back in March 2025, Macsteel became Platinum Sponsor of WTTF’s first fundraising walk in Amanzimtoti. More than 400 learners, educators, parents and community members came together to support West Park School, raising approximately R250,000 in funding, products and resources for a new technology classroom serving learners with intellectual challenges.

When Emergencies Hit

But it’s not all planned events and happy crowds. When things go wrong, a fast response is imperative.

In June 2025, heavy winds ripped the roofs off 14 classrooms at three different schools — Mariannridge Primary, Masibhamu Development Centre, and Mogoda Primary. Macsteel and WTTF didn’t hesitate. They fully funded and supplied the roofing materials, and within three months, every classroom had a sturdy new roof. Hundreds of learners and teachers were able to return to safe, dry learning environments.

That’s the kind of response that truly makes a difference.

Showing Up for Every Learner

Being part of a community also means standing with children who are often overlooked, including those on the autism spectrum.

On 18 April, 15 Macsteel employees joined the Futura Special School Autism Awareness Walk and Fun Day. While it was a smaller event than some of the others, it meant the world to the school and its learners.

It also reflects something special about Macsteelers: this kind of involvement isn’t a one-off. We simply show up.

What’s Coming Next – Isipingo Hills

And we’re not stopping there.

On 28 November 2026, Macsteel will once again be the Platinum Sponsor, this time for "Let’s Walk Together for Our School" at Isipingo Hills Primary School in Amanzimtoti. Walking The Talk Foundation is expecting between 3,000 and 5,000 walkers, making it the biggest turnout yet.

The mission is to build a dedicated school hall and assembly area for 1,100 learners who currently have to stand outside in the sun, rain and wind during school events. Once completed, the hall will host concerts, prize-givings and community gatherings, creating a safe, dignified space that will serve generations to come.

The Thread That Runs Through It All

What ties every one of these stories together is collaboration in its truest form. Learners walk alongside their parents. Educators stand beside company volunteers. Suppliers, sponsors and community members all move in the same direction, towards the same goal.

Each kilometre walked becomes a brick laid, a roof restored, a lab built and a future brightened.

Macsteel’s CSR initiatives prove that meaningful change does not always require grand gestures. Sometimes it simply requires showing up, lacing up and walking together. As the numbers demonstrate, when an entire community chooses to move as one, there is no limit to how far they can go—or to what they can build for the young people who need it most.
